Komodo Pink Beaches A Complete Travel Guide

Komodo Pink Beaches: Complete Travel Guide 2026

by Maya Bennett

The pink beaches of Komodo are among the most beautiful coastal landscapes in Indonesia. Surrounded by turquoise water, coral reefs and rugged island hills, these extraordinary stretches of sand have a natural pink tint that becomes especially noticeable where the waves meet the shore.

What many travelers do not realize is that Komodo National Park has more than one pink beach. The famous Pink Beach, also called Pantai Merah, is located on Komodo Island, while another beautiful pink shoreline lies on Padar Island. Although both have similar natural coloring, their scenery, snorkeling opportunities and typical visitor experiences are different.

This complete guide to the Komodo Pink Beaches explains where they are, why the sand is pink, how to reach them from Labuan Bajo, which beach is better, boat tours, snorkeling, national park fees, visitor limits, the best time to visit, where to stay, hotel room options, itineraries, safety advice and other destinations you can explore around Flores.

Quick travel tip: Labuan Bajo on Flores Island is the main gateway to Komodo National Park. A full-day speedboat tour is the easiest way to visit Pink Beach, Padar Island and the Komodo dragon trekking areas on the same trip. For more relaxed beach time, consider a private charter or multi-day boat trip.

Where Are The Pink Beaches In Komodo?

The pink beaches lie within Komodo National Park, a protected archipelago west of Flores Island in eastern Indonesia.

The park contains three main islands—Komodo, Rinca and Padar—along with smaller islands, protected marine habitats and spectacular coastlines.

The two best-known pink beaches are located on different islands.

Pink Beach on Komodo Island is the classic Pantai Merah. It is particularly famous for its natural pink sand and snorkeling.

Padar Island Pink Beach, sometimes called Long Pink Beach, is known for its long shoreline and surrounding hills.

Although visitors often combine the two islands in one itinerary, not every day tour stops at both beaches. Some tours hike Padar and then visit only Pantai Merah on Komodo Island.

Map Of Komodo Pink Beaches

Labuan Bajo is the main departure point for island tours. The route you actually follow depends on the boat type, park entry arrangements, weather, sea conditions and which stops your operator has included.

Why Is The Sand Pink?

The unusual color is natural.

Indonesia’s official tourism website explains that the pink hue comes from a mixture of pale sand and reddish biological material, including tiny fragments associated with coral and microscopic organisms called foraminifera.

Over time, wave action breaks down and distributes these materials along the shoreline.

When reddish fragments mix with light-colored sand, they produce the soft pink shades that make these beaches famous.

The color is not necessarily uniform. Some sections may look pale pink, while others appear more strongly colored, especially where wet sand and reddish grains are concentrated.

Bright sunlight, viewing angle, water conditions and the natural composition of the sand can all affect how pink the beach appears in photographs.

Because the coloring comes from natural coastal materials, visitors should never remove sand, coral fragments or shells as souvenirs.

1. Pink Beach On Komodo Island (Pantai Merah)

Pantai Merah is the most famous pink beach in Komodo National Park.

It sits along the coast of Komodo Island, surrounded by dry hills and brilliantly clear turquoise water.

The beach is particularly attractive because the pinkish sand contrasts with green-brown hills, blue water and the surrounding island landscape.

Visitors typically reach it as part of a boat trip from Labuan Bajo, often combining a beach stop with a guided walk in Komodo dragon habitat elsewhere on the island.

What Makes Pantai Merah Special?

The beach offers more than unusual sand.

Its surrounding waters contain coral reefs and tropical marine life, making it an attractive snorkeling location when conditions are suitable.

There are also opportunities for photography, shoreline walks and enjoying the changing colors of the water.

The sand itself may appear more subtly colored from a distance than heavily edited travel photos suggest.

Spend a little time looking closely at the shoreline rather than expecting every grain of sand to be bright pink.

Things To Do At Pink Beach

  • Walk along the pink sand.
  • Take photographs of the coastline and hills.
  • Snorkel when conditions and your guide permit.
  • Relax beside the water.
  • Observe the natural colors of the sand.
  • Enjoy views over the bay.

Can You Swim At Pink Beach?

Swimming may be possible in suitable conditions, but it should never be treated as automatically safe.

Komodo National Park has areas of strong tidal movement and ocean currents.

Always ask your boat crew about the permitted swimming zone and current conditions before entering the water.

Do not swim alone, particularly if you are unfamiliar with the area.

2. Pink Beach On Padar Island (Long Pink Beach)

Padar Island is famous for its panoramic viewpoints overlooking curved bays, rugged hills and beaches of contrasting colors.

One of its beaches has naturally pink-tinted sand and is sometimes called Long Pink Beach.

The scenery here is different from Pantai Merah.

Instead of focusing only on the beachfront, the surrounding ridges create an extraordinary landscape that can be appreciated from the water and from elevated viewpoints.

Padar’s pink beach is a particularly attractive stop for travelers interested in coastal photography and walking along a scenic shoreline.

What Makes Padar Pink Beach Different?

The Padar beach may appear more visibly pink at certain times and in certain sections, although this is not guaranteed.

The beach also has the advantage of being close to some of Komodo National Park’s most recognizable island scenery.

However, remember that hiking to the Padar viewpoint does not automatically mean your tour includes landing on the island’s pink beach.

If visiting the beach itself is a priority, confirm the actual landing stop with your boat operator before booking.

Which Pink Beach Is Better?

There is no universally better beach because each offers something different.

If you want an easy-to-add beach stop with snorkeling opportunities, Pantai Merah on Komodo Island is a strong choice.

If you are interested in seeing the pink shoreline in the context of Padar’s spectacular hills and bays, Padar Island Pink Beach may appeal more.

For a first trip to Komodo, the most practical choice is often the beach included in a well-organized full-day tour with enough time for both sightseeing and relaxation.

If your itinerary and budget permit, visiting both gives you the best comparison.

How To Get To The Komodo Pink Beaches

The journey normally begins in Labuan Bajo, a coastal town on the western side of Flores.

From there, visitors join boat tours traveling into Komodo National Park.

Step 1: Fly To Labuan Bajo

Komodo Airport, identified by the airport code LBJ, serves Labuan Bajo.

Travelers commonly connect through major Indonesian aviation hubs such as Bali or Jakarta, depending on current airline schedules.

Once you land, continue to your accommodation in Labuan Bajo and arrange your island tour.

Step 2: Book A Boat Tour

Most visitors choose between a shared speedboat, private boat charter and a multi-day sailing trip.

Before booking, ask the operator which pink beach is actually included.

A tour advertised as visiting “Pink Beach” may not visit the Padar Island pink shoreline.

Step 3: Confirm National Park Entry

Komodo National Park operates its own entry rules, visitor management system and activity charges.

Your operator should explain whether park entry, guide services, snorkeling activities and other required charges are included in the quoted package.

In 2026, visitor quotas make advance confirmation especially important.

Speedboat Vs Traditional Phinisi Boat

Full-Day Speedboat

A full-day speedboat tour is the most convenient option for visitors with limited time.

Boats can cover several island stops in one day, although the schedule may feel busy.

Common itineraries combine:

  • Padar Island viewpoint
  • Komodo Island or Rinca
  • Pink Beach
  • Taka Makassar
  • Manta Point when conditions permit
  • Other snorkeling stops

Not every operator follows the same route, and conditions may require changes.

Private Boat Charter

A private charter gives you greater flexibility over timing and the places you visit.

This can be useful for families, groups and photographers who want extra time at the beaches.

However, the operator still has to follow national park quotas, designated access zones and safety instructions.

Multi-Day Phinisi Sailing Trip

Traditional-style phinisi boats offer a slower island-hopping experience.

Depending on the vessel, you may have a private cabin, onboard meals and more time to explore the park across multiple days.

This is a good option if you want the boat journey to be a major part of the vacation.

Check cabin arrangements, bathroom facilities, air conditioning, crew qualifications, life jackets and whether the price includes all relevant park charges.

Komodo National Park Entrance Fees In 2026

Visiting the pink beaches involves national park rules because they lie within Komodo National Park.

The official park authority lists different revenue categories and activity charges under Indonesian Government Regulation No. 36 of 2024.

The final cost can depend on nationality, activity, itinerary and services.

Boat operators may quote prices that include some charges but not others.

Before paying, request an itemized breakdown for:

  • National park admission
  • Visitor registration and quota arrangements
  • Required local guiding services
  • Specific trekking or marine activity charges
  • Boat and crew services
  • Snorkeling equipment
  • Meals and drinking water
  • Transfers to the departure harbor
2026 park quota: Indonesia’s Ministry of Forestry announced a limit of 1,000 visitors per day from April 1, 2026, covering the principal tourism areas and associated activity management. The official national park website also provides visitor-capacity and SiOra information. Check availability before booking non-refundable flights or accommodation.

For the latest official information, consult the Komodo National Park fee and visitor-capacity page.

Snorkeling At Komodo Pink Beach

Snorkeling is one of the major attractions of Pantai Merah.

Komodo National Park protects marine ecosystems with reef-building corals, reef fish, sea turtles and many other species.

When visibility and sea conditions are suitable, snorkeling can reveal colorful coral formations and tropical fish in the waters near the beach.

Conditions vary across the park, however, and some areas experience very strong currents.

Never assume that clear water means calm or safe water.

Important Snorkeling Safety Tips

  • Follow your guide’s designated entry and exit points.
  • Wear a suitable flotation aid if needed.
  • Do not snorkel alone.
  • Avoid touching or standing on coral.
  • Stay clear of boat traffic.
  • Remain within the area approved by the crew.
  • Leave the water immediately if instructed.

Can You See Komodo Dragons Near Pink Beach?

Komodo dragons are wild animals living in their natural habitat on Komodo Island and other parts of the region.

However, visiting a pink beach does not guarantee a dragon sighting.

Tourists generally visit designated ranger-led trekking areas, such as Loh Liang on Komodo Island or Loh Buaya on Rinca Island, to learn about the species.

The national park authority says visitors should not explore principal dragon habitat areas independently.

Always follow ranger instructions, maintain appropriate distance and never approach or feed a Komodo dragon.

The animals can move quickly and should never be treated as harmless photo opportunities.

Padar Island Viewpoint Hike

The Padar Island viewpoint is one of the most famous experiences in Komodo National Park.

The trail climbs above curved bays and rugged hills, opening wide views across the surrounding islands.

Most visitors allow approximately one to two hours for the outing, depending on fitness, stops and current trail arrangements.

The climb involves exposed stairs or steep sections and can become extremely hot later in the day.

Early morning generally provides more comfortable conditions.

Carry water, wear comfortable shoes and follow the assigned visitor route.

Other Places To Visit In Komodo National Park

Taka Makassar

Taka Makassar is a small sandbar surrounded by clear water.

Its visible shape and size vary with the tides, making it a memorable stop when access conditions are suitable.

Manta Point

Manta Point is known for opportunities to observe manta rays in the marine environment.

Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, and strong currents may make entering the water inappropriate.

Choose a responsible operator that respects marine wildlife and avoids chasing or crowding animals.

Rinca Island

Rinca is another important island for learning about Komodo dragons and the dry savannah landscape.

Visits should follow ranger and park authority guidance.

Kanawa Island

Kanawa is known for its attractive coastal scenery and snorkeling opportunities.

It may be included in some boat itineraries, depending on the operator.

Kelor Island

Kelor is a smaller island with a beach and hilltop views.

It can be a convenient addition to a boat tour focused on nearby coastal scenery.

Best Time To Visit The Komodo Pink Beaches

Komodo National Park has a tropical climate with wetter and relatively drier periods.

The dry season, generally around April to October, is often recommended for visiting the pink beaches because of the higher likelihood of clear skies and favorable touring conditions.

However, sea conditions can change quickly throughout the year.

April To June

These months can offer greener island hills and attractive landscapes after the wetter season.

The combination of green vegetation, pinkish beaches and blue water can be particularly beautiful.

July To August

These months are popular with visitors and can bring busy tour schedules.

Reserve boats and accommodation early if your dates are fixed.

September To October

These months can be excellent for island scenery, although hills may look drier and more golden.

Always check forecasts and sea conditions.

November To March

The wetter season brings a greater chance of rain and less predictable marine conditions.

Some trips may still operate, but cancellations and itinerary changes are possible.

Book flexible arrangements when traveling during unsettled periods.

Best Time Of Day For Pink Beach Photography

Late morning and the earlier part of the afternoon often provide strong sunlight that makes the contrast between pink sand and turquoise water more visible.

Early morning can produce softer landscape photographs, particularly around Padar Island.

Cloud cover, sand moisture and natural color variation all influence the final appearance.

Do not expect every photograph to look identical to highly saturated images seen on social media.

Where To Stay For Komodo Pink Beaches

Labuan Bajo is the most practical place to stay for visiting Komodo National Park.

It has hotels, restaurants, dive operators, transport providers and access to the main departure harbor.

For most visitors, spending at least two nights in Labuan Bajo allows one full day for island exploration without having to fly in and out on the same day.

Suggested 3-Day Komodo Pink Beaches Itinerary

Day 1 — Arrive In Labuan Bajo

Fly into Labuan Bajo and travel to your hotel.

Use the afternoon to explore the town, confirm your next day’s boat departure, check any remaining park-entry requirements and enjoy a sunset view.

Avoid scheduling a long island tour immediately after a flight if delays could leave you stranded.

Day 2 — Komodo National Park Boat Tour

Leave early for your island-hopping experience.

A possible itinerary includes:

  1. Padar Island viewpoint hike
  2. Komodo Island ranger-guided wildlife experience
  3. Pantai Merah Pink Beach
  4. Taka Makassar, subject to the itinerary and tides
  5. Snorkeling or manta observation at approved locations when conditions permit

If you specifically want Padar Pink Beach, make sure your operator schedules a beach landing rather than only the viewpoint hike.

Day 3 — Relax Or Continue Around Flores

Use your final day to relax in Labuan Bajo, join a shorter marine excursion or continue exploring Flores Island.

Travelers interested in volcanic landscapes may extend their journey toward Bajawa and Mount Inerie.

You can read Aoqira’s Inerie Volcano hiking guide for more information about that part of Flores.

How Much Time Do You Need At Pink Beach?

Many organized boat tours allow a relatively short stop at the beach.

For a quick visit, 30–45 minutes can be enough to walk the sand and take photographs.

Allowing an hour or more gives you more time to appreciate the scenery and enjoy snorkeling when conditions permit.

If you are planning a dedicated photography trip or want to visit both main pink beaches, a private boat itinerary may be more suitable.

What To Pack For The Komodo Pink Beaches

  • Snorkeling equipment, if not included
  • Waterproof phone pouch

Carry enough drinking water, especially if your tour includes trekking in the hot sun.

Is It Safe To Visit The Komodo Pink Beaches?

The beaches can be enjoyable and memorable destinations when visited responsibly with suitable transport and safe conditions.

However, there are several important risks to consider.

Ocean Currents

Parts of Komodo National Park experience powerful currents. Never enter the water without checking conditions with your guide or boat crew.

Komodo Dragons

On Komodo Island, remember that you are visiting wildlife habitat. Do not wander into restricted areas or approach wildlife independently.

Sun And Heat

The tropical sun can be intense, especially on exposed island trails.

Wear sun protection and stay hydrated.

Boat Safety

Choose operators that provide suitable safety equipment and clear instructions.

Before departure, confirm life-jacket availability, weather arrangements and what happens if marine conditions force a cancellation.

Responsible Travel At The Pink Beaches

Komodo National Park is a protected landscape and marine ecosystem, not simply a collection of tourist beaches.

The Indonesian park authority prohibits activities that damage habitats, disturb wildlife or violate park entry requirements.

When visiting:

  • Do not remove pink sand or coral fragments.
  • Never feed or disturb wildlife.
  • Avoid standing on coral reefs.
  • Do not leave rubbish on beaches or boats.
  • Follow the authorized routes.
  • Respect ranger and boat crew instructions.
  • Use only permitted landing and snorkeling locations.
  • Do not fly a drone without the necessary authorization.

Responsible tourism helps preserve the natural features that make these beaches worth visiting.

Yes. Pantai Merah on Komodo Island and the pink beach on Padar Island are the two best-known visitor destinations. Other smaller pinkish shorelines also exist in the wider area.

Can you visit both pink beaches in one day?

Potentially, depending on the boat itinerary, park arrangements and weather. Not every standard tour includes landings at both beaches, so confirm before booking.

How do you reach Komodo Pink Beach from Bali?

A common route is to fly from Bali to Labuan Bajo, then join a boat tour from Labuan Bajo into Komodo National Park. Always check current flight schedules.

Can you swim at Pink Beach?

Swimming can be possible in designated areas when the sea is safe, but strong currents occur in the park. Follow the advice of your guide or boat crew.

Is snorkeling good at Pink Beach?

Pantai Merah is known for coral reefs and tropical marine life. Snorkeling quality depends on visibility, weather and currents.

Komodo dragons live on Komodo Island, but beach visits do not guarantee sightings. Dedicated ranger-guided wildlife trails are the appropriate way to learn about and observe them.

What is the best month to visit?

The April–October period is often recommended for island tours, but conditions vary. Check marine forecasts and park access before departure.

Where should I stay?

Labuan Bajo is the most convenient base. Seaesta Komodo, Bayview Gardens and AYANA Komodo cover different accommodation styles and budgets.

Is Pink Beach worth visiting?

Yes. The naturally pink-tinted sand, turquoise water and island scenery make it an unusual beach destination. It is particularly rewarding when combined with Padar Island and other Komodo National Park attractions.

Final Thoughts

The pink beaches of Komodo are among Indonesia’s most distinctive natural attractions.

Pantai Merah on Komodo Island offers a memorable combination of pink sand, clear water and snorkeling opportunities, while Padar Island’s pink shoreline is surrounded by some of the park’s most spectacular coastal scenery.

The easiest way to explore the area is from Labuan Bajo on Flores Island. A well-planned boat tour can combine a pink beach with Padar’s viewpoint, a ranger-guided wildlife experience and other marine stops.

For the best experience, allow enough time to enjoy the landscape rather than choosing a tour based only on how many stops it advertises.

Most importantly, respect Komodo National Park’s conservation rules and changing visitor limits. The natural features that make these beaches beautiful are also the reason they need careful protection.
